Sunday, July 16, 2006 My unit was given unenviable task of helping in the national day parade 2006 and although we new recce corporals have so far nicely avoided any duty we were caught last saturday. we belonged to support coy so our purpose is simply to support the GUARDS who were doing most of the work being the garang soldiers they are i.e. we unloaded free gifts and food crates from tunnels and trucks and distributed stuff boring. we were supposed to be released by 1900 by then as our PC proudly told us, "We have to remain until all the children have left the stadium because we are the quick reaction force. in the event of a fire or if some terrorist attack, we have to go in and evacuate all the people. so actually we are the most important people because we are protecting the women and children." the thought of the 3o odd of us rushing bravely into the stadium(probably against the overwhelming flow of screaming P5 kids and their teachers who are sensibly heading out of the stadium with all possible speed) to help in some way or another ( maybe we can all help to carry a few of the buggers ) makes me wince. i mean seriously, if anything goes wrong, people know to get out right ??? waste our time sighbut then the few of us were quite lucky haha. the rest attached to other coy as road marshalls remained on the scene until the last bus ferrying all the kids had docked in the nearby interchange b4 gathering to count strength and have an AAR (poor ppl - prob knocked off around midnite) we also had a 2 hour plus lunch break. after a nice meal provided by pizza hut, we went to the nearby KFC with free flow of drinks to sit and chill in their heavenly aircon. we came back and continued our gluttony with freebies like milo packets, milk packets, ice creams and leftovers from lunch. seriously a waste of money. there were some rehearsals being carried out outside the stadium which we got to watch (since we were NOT given passes to go inside ASSHOLES SELFISH!) there was a skipping rope show ( little kids looking like synchronized jumping bunnies) a couple of breakdancing ( one of the group was really good - they got the looks and moves - they were winners of the 987 FM hollaback crew competition too) and a few people walking on stilts. there was a gigantic walking milo can too but i didn't bring digi cam so too bad. we saw the parachutists who were very entertaining with their long and slow spirals above the stadium before they touched down. there was also a helicopter hovering over the stadium which we spent some time wondering what performance it was part of before we realized it was the camera heli to give the overhead view haha. the fireworks were really amazing as it was my first time at ground zero. i could see the launchers just across the street and we were in the fireworks debris area ( technically we were supposed to remain under the tentage but of course when it started we were all outside lol) the sound and the explosion of brilliant colours high above us made it feel maybe the day was worth the time. The next day me and clement went for a trial run for the Real Run event at sentosa. We had chosen to run in the men’s junior category for 5.5 km but during the trial run we were probably the only 2 18 yr olds around. Damn embarrassing mustn’t tell them we are NSFs, specialists some more. All the youngsters and pros ran the 10 k so we pretty much trailed behind the New Balance guy as he showed us most of the route at a rather nice and comfortable pace before we really ran the last 1 and ½ k at a fast pace. We reached the end point almost 10 min b4 the rest haha but quite sad lah no sense of achievement and no girls to see :( |
