Sunday, May 06, 2007 Thank god for Parental Guidance. After Police & Thief, Maggie & Me, Living With Lydia and all the other crappy Mediacorp productions, I have practically given up all hope of ever watching Singapore TV. (Linda Liao is hot but After Hours is still a crappy show.) PG was the only local drama/comedy that I would ever really die to watch. The greatest appeal of the show lies with the actors and actresses, big and small. Jocelyn the real "grown-up" of the family, Jonathan the boy with multiple allergies and Jolene the extremely cute and cheeky little girl that I feel is the star of the show. Jessica Hsuan is perfect in her role as Ling Toh, the highly-driven career woman who is also very particular about personal hygiene. In my opinion, Adrian Pang is a good actor, not fantastic but he gets the job done. The rest of the cast and crew, including Kenneth Tsang (Horny Old Father) and En Lai help to make the show a gem that it is. The plot of PG is a far cry above other local productions and it makes the show so enjoyable. The fights between Ling and James, their struggle to take care of the kids, Ling's father's fling with a 20 year old girlfriend and his subsequent re-kindled love for his divorced wife, Ling and James varsity days, Terence's vain attempts to convince Ling that he was the one who dumped her and his eventual turn towards spiritualism are just some of the better parts. Ling and James are just the kind of couple you would root for to fall in love with each other cos you know they do love each other and they just cant show it. I thought one of the best scenes in the series was on the eve of Ling's departure to London. When Ling asked, "Is there any other reason for me to stay?", James could only reply, "Well, is there any reason that would make you want to stay?". The ensuing silence and longing stares at each other is so modern love story. It simply encapsulates the confusion and loneliness of two individuals too proud and shy to admit it. |
