The Motorcyle Diaries
By recommendation from a good friend, I picked The Motorcyle Diaries as my DVD-to-be-watched for the week( the name is a misnomer - the characters spent only 1/3 of the movie onboard "The Mighty One" which didn't proved to be very mighty at all :) but then i found that part of the movie the most interesting maybe it's cos i can empathize with riding a bike haha)
The plot revolves around a pair of best friends, Che Guevara and Alberto Granado, who set off from Bueno Aires towards Venezula on a leaky motorcycle. The highlights of the movie includes obviously the beauty of the South American landscape which is quite breathtaking. The whole theme of the movie is adventure, the idea that 2 buddies would dare to travel across a whole continent with nothing but some duffel bags piled on top of a dying motorcycle. COOL!
The movie kicks off on a light-hearted and innocent note with Ernesto and Alberto visiting the formers' girlfriend who gave him $15 american dollars to buy her some swimwear if he happens to cross the border and Ernesto's refusal to relinquish the money provides many moments of comic relief along the way. As their journey continues, the tone grows more serious as the pair loses their focus on chasing skirts and more on the living condition of the people they meet on their way. The duo's final destination was at a leper's colony where they volunteered their services for a month before they left for Venezula where they parted. After his travelling experience, Ernesto would eventually end up an important leader in the Cuban Revolution in the 1950s.
The movie really set me thinking. How many of us would dare to give up a year of his time to see a different land, risking life and limb along the way? Honestly, it has never occured to me to do so, maybe it's because i m a singaporean haha we chiong degree then chiong job and marriage and kids and then retire and sit in kopitiam to sip kopi. Maybe maybe just maybe i could take some time off too in the not too distant future maybe...
