Saturday, January 27, 2007 Finally, I managed to watch Pan's Labyrinth. The three quests that Ofelia has to complete in order to regain her place as a Princess of the Underworld are integrated seamlessly with the main plot of Captain Vidal attempting to exterminate the rebels after the end of the Spanish Civil War. There are some rather violent scenes (NC16) contrasting with the fairy tale portions of the film. The movie builds to a suspenseful climax and then ends off by leaving the viewer unsure of Ofelia's fate. Did her spirit really enter the Underworld as her Princess and rule for many years with compassion and justice? Or was it simply a cruel trick of the mind before she passed away? |
