The first thought that hit me was "Oh my god, they are so old!" I mean we are talking mid-thirties and forties men in green. They have pot bellies, love handles, even wrinkles. These poor souls were going for their battalions ATEC. I was an attached umpire and all i could think was that it strongly resembled some family camping trip with your dad and uncles.

The 4 days out in the field were pretty much standard fare. I could only kick myself hard in the ass for not bringing mosquito repellant since the MOSQ index in the training area was beyond safe levels. The old-timers came well equipped with their coils(8th ICT for most of them) so things weren't as miserable as they could be. Still, we spent most of our free time swatting the pests. I believe it is best to let the mosquito settle down onto your skin first instead of attempting to squash it the moment it is spotted. Let the blood-thirsty bastard think that it is meal-time then ... the world is a better place :)

We had lots of free time and I was more than happy to catch up on my sleep. My team had quite friendly people and there was plenty of small talk. One thing is for sure, sex is a hot topic no matter what age you are. Mostly it was about some hot japanese wife that one of their platoon mates is married to. Or how Hawaiian chicks dig black males.(one of them was studying biz in Hawaii Pacific University) Me thinks one of them was having a mid-life crisis, seeing that he is still woefully single and extremely horny. P.S. he is a primary school teacher.

You gotta hand it to them. We spent almost ten hours stoning on the reservoir side(it was really blazing hot out there and we only had 2 measly clumps of trees for shelter) before getting "merry-up" orders. We moved to the link up location and waited there for almost an hour before we were told the vehicles could not pick us up at our current location and the team had to proceed on foot north close to 2 kilometres to link up. Out came the pitiful cries of "ahhhh my blister burst liao!" "wah lau cannot liao. juz tell them cannot. see if they dont come to pick us up then we stay here la." "aiya we so old already still kena tekan..." After much discussion, they managed to bully the vehicle commander to detour around and pick them up via a much longer route. Less than ten minutes later, doubts started to surface. "Shit. Ronald is the VC. sure holland one." "Eh remember that time, they not enough maps, some of the VCs no maps. " "How ah how?" With many grumbles and sighs, they cancelled the pick-up order and humped the 2 klicks on foot. I juz thought the whole thing was hilarious T_T

Sometimes, it is best not to do as reservists do. After a long and arduous trek to our new location, we picked a well-concealed but heavily infested by mosquitoes to camp. The spot was extremely stuffy too so we moved up to a nearby road to cool down. The road bent round a large water body so there was a gentle breeze blowing. We sat down and they began with their various conspiracy theories of why their taskings were so difficult. I was only too happy to have a coil burning beside me, a scarf covering my face and the wind blowing at me. It was around 5.30 am at that time. We had spent the last 2 hours rushing to our location at a breakneck pace. I was asleep in 5 minutes, assuming that they would wake me up after they were done with their chit-chat so we could all return to our ORV. Lucky for us, I was a light sleeper. around 7 plus in the morning, i woke up to the sound of an oncoming rover and the sight of 2 other middle-aged humpty dumptys snoozing on the gravel road beside me. "Rover! rover! zhao!" worked well for a wake-up call and we dashed off the road. I believe it must be due to the generation gap. The 2 of them dived straight into the thick bush while I ran and took cover behind the bush. End result: No capture but soldiers wounded by thorns. Haha.
